Cartoon/Quote | | The "Other"
Button by Jane Cage,
CFO & COO, Heartland Technology Solutions
We have a new phone
system here at the office. I've been busy configuring buttons,
learning new shortcuts and setting preferences so that I can be more
efficient in my use of this new tool. I know from practical
experience that what I learn in the first couple of weeks will be
the majority of what I learn about the system. Have you ever
considered that the same principle applies to a tool you have been
using at your computer for probably years now - the mouse?
Microsoft has made many
improvements to increase your efficient use of Microsoft Office
products by taking advantage of a key that we seldom use - the right
button on the mouse. Office 2010 takes incredible advantage of the
right click.

Business Continuity Tip
A Plan to Rely On
During a disaster, you,
your family, your employees, and your neighbors will rely on each
other for help. There is a shared responsibility when it comes to
your level of preparedness. To be truly prepared, everyone has to
work together as a team.
The Red Cross encourages
three actions with their "Be Red Cross Ready" campaign: Get a Kit,
Make a Plan, and Be Informed. The worst time to
scramble for solutions is during an emergency. Start making
personal, family, and community preparations now, so you know who to
rely on.

Antispam
Filtering: The End of Junk Email used with permission from
Cisco
Antispam filtering helps keep your
business from being inundated with irritating, time-consuming,
and sometimes dangerous junk email. The following is a brief
guide to understanding what antispam filtering does, the
differences between software-only and hardware solutions, and
what to look for in an antispam filtering appliance.
Antispam
Filtering - What It Does Antispam filtering is an
essential component of any network security toolkit. It
prevents unwanted email from overwhelming employee inboxes.
Antispam solutions can also protect against the latest
viruses, phishing attacks, and other threats that arrive
through email.
The Differences
Between Antispam Software and Hardware Antispam
filtering falls into two categories: software-only products
and dedicated hardware appliances (which use their own
internal software).

Protecting your
wireless network reprinted with permission from the HP Small
Business Center
Why wireless security? When you
have a wireless network, you need to make sure it's kept
secure. An unencrypted network presents the potential for
security breaches.
Wireless
technologies that provide long-range connectivity can't be
contained within an office. When you use a network that's not
secure, hackers could potentially "capture" the information
you're sending back and forth. This means passwords, records,
and more.
Isn't my network
already secure? With some older wireless technologies,
like Bluetooth, access is limited by physical proximity to the
corporate network. However, wireless technologies that provide
long-range connectivity, such as 802.11n, can't be contained
within an office space. That means anyone within range of a
non-secure network can gain access.

Miss Communication By Craig Kitch
Not long ago, I held a communication
workshop for a restaurant chain and asked a pretty young lady
to assist me in a demonstration. As she walked to the front of
the room, I announced to the group that we had just held a
beauty contest and that one of the finalists was with us
today. As she turned to face the group, I introduced her as
Miss Communication and asked for a nice round of applause.
Following the ovation, I indicated that she was obviously
pretty and smart and asked why everyone was using her for a
scapegoat. "You blame her for everything", I said. When the
customer is not properly served, and complains, we blame it on
Miss Communication. When two departments are not working well
together and the corporate office wants to know what's wrong,
the answer is often Miss Communication. While this was
obviously an oddball demonstration, I got their attention and
made my point. Miscommunication has become such a scapegoat
that many people accept it as a viable reason for any problem.

3 Steps to Streamline Your Next
Project Reprinted with permission from the Microsoft Small
Business Center
Have you ever had a project "go sideways"
on you? When it happens to you, it feels like you are treading
water. You're working hard, but going nowhere. After building
a beautiful coordinated project plan in Microsoft Project or
Microsoft Excel, your dates start slipping. You can see that
too much time is being wasted on unnecessary communications,
but how do you take back control? Typically, the problem isn't
in the upfront planning, it's in the ongoing communication and
collaboration.
Follow these three
steps to ensure all team members are on the same page, making
progress to your mutual goal.
